Heart of Bologna
Nestled into the center of the city is the Piazza Maggiore. This piazza is one of the largest and oldest in Italy, having been built in 1200. It was once home to the largest open-air market up until the mid 1800s. It was the location of the first seat of government for Bologna and was used to gather the citizens for announcing anything from new laws to criminal sentences. The square also features the Basilica di San Patronio which is the most beautiful church I have ever stepped foot in, without a doubt. The only word I can think to use to describe it is inspirational. It's huge vaulted ceilings and spacious design just amazed me. I think this was my favorite part. It was just so moving. I know I will have the memory of first walking in for the rest of my life!
