You haven’t gotten the full experience of a European city until you’re in the middle of tens of thousands of fans watching their home team’s soccer match. A group of us decided to dive into this cultural opportunity, and, with some much appreciated help from Susie at our hotel front desk, we got our hands on eleven tickets to Inter Milan vs Eintracht Frankfurt. We traversed Milan’s subway system and hordes of beer-fueled German soccer fans before we found our seats in the massive San Siro Stadium and met up with Sheva, a visitor from Paris we met the night before. We arrived about an hour before the match started, but it wasn’t long before we were caught up in the hype of the crowd. We shamelessly did our best to participate in the Italian Inter cheers and rally cries, much to the amusement of the fans around us. They welcomed us with open arms, however, translating the chants for us and offering some insider stats on the team. One fan passionately lamented two of the team’s best players, who were both out with injuries. This was evident, as Frankfurt scored within the first five minutes and outplayed Milan for the rest of the game. After this, Frankfurt played a heavily defensive game, while Milan struggled to capitalize on offensive opportunities, resulting in a 1-0 German victory. Regardless of the score, the match was an experience like no other, as an entire city was unified in support of their team. It was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity being a part of the camaraderie, the excitement, and the passion of Italian soccer!
